Istanbul City Breaks from Belgium
Where two continents meet over spice markets and domes.
Istanbul is the best-value long weekend from Belgium: direct flights of around three and a half hours, a favourable exchange rate, and more to see than you can fit into three days. It is also the most common connecting point for our Pakistan and Umrah routes, which makes a stopover almost free.
When to go
April to May and September to October are the sweet spots — warm enough to walk all day, cool enough that you want to. July and August are hot and crowded. Winter is cold and often wet, but the city is quiet and hotel rates are at their lowest, and the Bosphorus in fog is its own thing.
Which side of the city to stay on
Sultanahmet puts you within walking distance of the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Topkapı — right for a first visit, and quiet in the evenings. Beyoğlu and Karaköy are where the city actually eats and drinks, ten minutes across the Golden Horn. Kadıköy, on the Asian side, is cheaper and more local, at the cost of a ferry each time you cross.
For a first three-night trip, Sultanahmet or Karaköy. For a return visit, cross the water.
Using Istanbul as a stopover
Turkish Airlines connects Brussels to Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Jeddah through Istanbul. A stopover of a few days on the way out or back typically adds very little to the fare, and it breaks up a long journey — which matters a great deal if you are travelling with children or elderly parents.

Three nights covers the main sights without rushing. Four or five lets you cross to the Asian side and slow down.

Yes — it is the most common connection on that route and a stopover usually costs very little extra.
Is Istanbul expensive?
It is one of the better-value city breaks from Belgium. Flights and hotels are the main cost; food and transport are cheap by Belgian standards.
