Belgium Family Visit Visa for Pakistani Relatives: How It Actually Works

Bringing parents or family from Pakistan to visit you in Belgium is a Schengen short-stay (type C) visa. The application is submitted in Pakistan, but most of the documentary weight sits with you, the sponsor in Belgium — and that is where most refusals originate.

Which visa you actually need

For a visit of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, this is a Schengen C visa for the purpose of visiting family or friends. It is not a residence route and it does not lead to one. If your family intend to stay longer or settle, this is the wrong application and submitting it anyway will cause problems later.

What the sponsor in Belgium provides

This is the part people underestimate. As sponsor you are typically expected to evidence four things: who you are and that you are legally resident, that you can support the visit financially, that there is somewhere for the visitor to stay, and a formal undertaking of responsibility.

That last item — the engagement de prise en charge, also known as the Annex 3bis — is a formal commitment, legalised at your commune, in which you accept financial responsibility for your visitor’s stay, healthcare and return. It is not a formality. It creates a real obligation and it is where applications most often fall down on format or on income.

  • Proof of identity and legal residence in Belgium
  • Proof of income — usually recent payslips and an employment contract, or accounts if self-employed
  • Proof of accommodation, and evidence you have room for the visitor
  • The engagement de prise en charge, correctly completed and legalised at your commune
  • An invitation letter explaining the relationship, the purpose and the dates

Income thresholds and the exact document set depend on your situation and on the relationship. Get the current requirements confirmed before you start collecting paperwork — assembling the wrong set is the most common way people lose a month.

What the applicant in Pakistan provides

  • Passport with adequate remaining validity and blank pages
  • Completed application form and biometrics appointment
  • Travel medical insurance covering the whole Schengen area for the full stay
  • Return flight reservation matching the stated dates
  • Evidence of ties to Pakistan — employment, property, family, anything showing a reason to return
  • Bank statements showing genuine, ongoing activity

The evidence of ties is the item that decides borderline cases. A consulate refusing on "intention to leave the territory could not be ascertained" is saying it was not convinced the visitor would go home. Retired parents with property, a pension and other children in Pakistan are a much easier case than a young single applicant with no fixed employment — and the file should be built accordingly.

The order to do it in

  1. 1Confirm current requirements — do not work from a guide, including this one, without checking.
  2. 2Sponsor assembles their documents and gets the engagement de prise en charge legalised at the commune.
  3. 3Send the sponsor pack to the applicant in Pakistan.
  4. 4Applicant books the biometrics appointment. Appointment availability is often the longest single wait, so do this early.
  5. 5Applicant assembles their own documents, including insurance and a return reservation.
  6. 6Submit. Then wait, without booking anything non-refundable.

On that last point: book a flight reservation, not a paid ticket, and make sure any hotel booking has a cancellation window that outlasts the expected decision. People lose real money here every year.

Why these applications get refused

  1. 1Insufficient or unclear evidence that the visitor will return to Pakistan.
  2. 2Sponsor income below the required level, or evidenced in the wrong format.
  3. 3The engagement de prise en charge missing, unlegalised, or incorrectly completed.
  4. 4Insurance that does not cover the full stay or the full Schengen area.
  5. 5Inconsistencies between documents — dates that do not match, a purpose that shifts between the invitation letter and the form.
  6. 6Bank statements showing a large deposit that appeared days before the application. It reads as borrowed money and it is noticed.

If it is refused

You will receive a notice stating the ground. Read it properly before doing anything — the ground determines whether appealing or reapplying is the better route, and they have different deadlines. Documentary refusals are usually better fixed and resubmitted. We have written about that separately.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Belgian family visit visa take?

It varies by season and by visa centre, and appointment availability is often a longer wait than the decision itself. Start well before your intended travel dates, especially around summer and Eid.

Can I sponsor my parents if I am not a Belgian citizen?

Legal residence in Belgium is generally what matters rather than citizenship, but the exact requirements depend on your permit type. Confirm your specific situation before starting.

What income do I need to prove as a sponsor?

There is a required level and it depends on your household and the number of visitors. Because it is revised, get the current figure confirmed rather than relying on a number found online.

Should I book flights before the visa is approved?

No. Use a flight reservation for the application and only buy the ticket once the visa is issued. Make sure any hotel booking can be cancelled after the expected decision date.

What happens if the application is refused?

You get a written ground for refusal. That ground determines whether to appeal or to correct the file and reapply. Send it to us and we will tell you which situation you are in.

Can my family extend their stay once they are here?

A short-stay visa is limited to 90 days in any 180-day period and extensions are granted only in exceptional circumstances. Plan the visit around the 90 days rather than intending to extend.
